Choosing Focus in Place of Competition

Many people want to win in life, for this reason, they work so hard and compete unnecessarily with others to achieve their heart desires, what these people do not know is that winning in life does not have to be that hard; because they won the race against millions of sperms in their mother’s womb even before they came unto the earth. That race was won by no effort of theirs but by special grace and intended purpose of the Creator who predestined every human being with special gifts and abilities to fulfil a specific task on this earth. Depending on the task you are on earth to perform, God gives you the required environment and network to grow in. Some may start worse and end best, others with relevance to their purpose may have to go through serious challenges before breaking out to understand the pain of others and offer a helping hand. Others start best and end best. Every single person making a great level of impact has unique experiences and thus it becomes unnecessary to compete with them. Knowing this truth will help you desist from competing with others you think are going ahead of you.

Comparison with the sperm race
When you were a sperm, you were competing with others and won the race but the moment you entered this earth, you found yourself in the midst of many others who also won the sperm race. Knowing then that everyone is a winner, there is no need for you to compete with anyone; you just have to focus on achieving your God-given purpose on this earth. Moreover, the fact that you are a firstborn or have younger siblings does not make you more important than them. They equally raced with a different group of sperms and won the race.
A group of sperms have only one vision – “to get to the egg”. In life however, every person is unique and has a unique vision. Some want to be famous actors or singers; others want to be the best lawyers or contractors in the world. Some other person is trying hard to write the best poems whilst others want to write the best movies. If your vision is to be a contractor, why will you want to compete with someone whose vision is to be an actor/actress? Even if you have the same gift, there are still different ways in which the gifts are used.
If you pick two gifted singers, you might be surprised to know that one may want to be the best foreign gospel artiste while the other may want to be the best local artiste. In the same way, if you sit in an exam room to write an exam like the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with others, you will notice that there are some who have written the paper before and got grade E, and all they want this time around is a grade B to shoot up their grades to make it possible for them to enter an institution of higher learning. For you, it might be your first time writing the paper and getting grade A is thus a must.
These are different visions within the same circles. It is therefore a waste of time to compete with others in life. One thing about competition is that it shifts your attention to the strength of your opponent making you lose focus on your own abilities.
When you lose focus on your abilities, you begin to lose your confidence and you cannot afford to do that! Confidence is a master ingredient for becoming a winner in life.
In a nutshell, we have all been designated a specific task to perform on this earth. We cannot fulfill God’s entire purpose for man alone; the reason why He made the sky very big is to make it impossible for any two birds to crush. Focus on your purpose, teach others below you how to fly and rejoice with those who fly adjacent to you or even better than you. Together, we make the world a better place to live.
